AWS Re:Invent

2024

At AWS Re:Invent Snowflake holds an offsite event that doubles as both a meeting and social space. A grand entry into the Wakuda restaurant was designed to give the event a “Vegas” flair. With limited ability to alter the interior of the restaurant, temporary dividers were designed to create semi-private meeting rooms throughout the restaurant. This Japanese winter concept aims to tie together Snowflake’s corporate identity with the existing environment in the restaurant interior.

This competition was created by Tulane School of Architecture to design and build the CNC Millhaus Facade. Millhaus is home to the 3-axis CNC router at Tulane School of Architecture. The prompt asked designs to consider the new facade as signage for Millhaus. In response, we aimed to re-create the TSA Millhaus logo three dimensionally at a large scale. At a micro-level each band of wood is uniquely cut & finished, this is accomplished by adjusting the step-over rate and angle of each cut. While creating signage was a key element of the prompt, we also focused on treating the installation as an educational tool for architecture students. Prospective Millhaus users will be able to see a range of finish options on one consistent form. In contrast to wood, aluminum is rarely cut in Millhaus. For this reason, aluminum was desired to display the capabilities in materiality of CNC routing. These aluminum panels are then offset from the walls to emphasize the depth & slope of the wood running down the facade.

Grasshopper for Rhino allows for designers to create through process rather than a preconceived idea. These three distinct water holding vessels were created with one Grasshopper script. While the vessels were inspired by the water catchment abilities of the pineapple plant each form becomes drastically different by altering graphic and numeric values.
